-Albert Einstein

Overview

The High Priestess embodies quiet confidence, spiritual intelligence, and unwavering self-trust. Highly perceptive and deeply intuitive, she understands the power of intention, language, and the metaphysical forces that shape reality. This card resonates strongly with feminine spiritual power and faith in one’s inner wisdom.

There is a quote by Mohades Najumi that captures her essence well:

“The woman who does not require validation is the most feared individual on the planet.”

This sentiment reflects the Priestess perfectly—though it also hints at her rigidity. She can become immovable within the structures she has built, resistant to external influence or interference.

Symbolism

Visually, The High Priestess sits between two pillars—one black and one white—marked with the letters B and J, symbolizing Boaz and Jachin, the pillars of Solomon’s Temple. Behind her, a blue veil stretches between the columns, adorned with palm leaves and pomegranates, symbols of fertility, knowledge, and the hidden mysteries.

She sits firmly upon a stone throne, gazing straight ahead. At her feet rests the moon, partially covered by her translucent blue robes, which flow like water—emphasizing her connection to the subconscious and emotional realms. In her hands, she holds a scroll labeled “TORA,” referencing sacred, esoteric knowledge. Around her neck hangs a cross, and her headdress reflects the phases of the moon, reinforcing her dominion over cycles, intuition, and the unseen.

If you want to know the source of the concept of why this card is defined the way it is, check out the article “Reading Reversals” in Chapter 6 of this knowledge base.

If you simply want to know the reason and not the method of deciphering, here are some possible ways to read the card in reversed.

Deciphering the High Priestess reversed

Ignoring your intuition

Maybe your intuition has been silenced by all the noise around you— or perhaps it’s struggling to find the worlds. In this case, The High priestess reversed is urging you to turn inwards to find truth. Your intuition is struggling to communicate something with you that is necessary for your path forward. Keep an eye out for synchronicities that strike a chord with you; your guides will be leading you to the message you’re looking to decipher.

Co-dependency

The High Priestess is the pinnacle of independent feminine power. It’s not material power, like The Empress, who is the head of the matriarchy. This is the source of the power that is the root of The Empress’s ability. Without having started somewhere, she would have never bloomed into what she became.

In this sense, The High Priestess reversed symbolizes that you are co-dependent, and seeking external validation. You are seeking praise, security, advice or approval from people who couldn’t hold a candle to your abilities and knowledge. All the answers are inside of yourself, if you just turn inwards.

Blind Spots & Hidden enemies

The high priestess is secretive, and in the reversed position it can indicate there is trouble lurking in the shadows. If you feel like something is afoot, be direct with the person you believe to know what’s happening. Keep bringing up the issue until the truth emerges, and their resolve weakens.

If it seems they truly do not see an issue, this could be someone who has a secret agenda against you. They maybe lying on your name, breaking bonds between you and others without you knowing. Express this, and the truth may come to light through the skepticism of someone else. This could be someone closer than you think or a third party to other important people in your life.

Mood Swings

Your intuition is suffering due to a struggle emotionally regulating yourself. Perhaps you are overly invested int he outcome of a situation, and thus you are ignoring the signs that things are hitting the rocks. This can indicate trouble in diplomacy, tact, judgement and discernment. There could be an indicator of envy towards what someone else has causing you to withdraw from others. Ground yourself before moving forward with any solid plans, there’s no shame in emotionally withdrawing from something that no longer serves you.

Over Stimulation

The chaos of your life is causing you to fall out of touch with your intuition. If you are so busy and overstimulated you cannot turn inwards, this is a sign that you’re ignoring something significant in the wings. Staying busy maybe your attempt to avoid something, or someones attempt to pull the wool over your eyes to blind you from their indiscretions.

Eventually everything will come to a head uglier than you could have ever imagined if you don’t slow down and find a solution now. The check engine lights are on, but you’re refusing to look at them.
